Pioneers Hang with Dogs

Senior night festivities on hand for the boys team tonight at the Joe. Typically, one would expect a cupcake on senior night so you send the seniors out with a W. Not SK this year, their senior night gets scheduled against the team that has been at the top of the state polls for most of the season, the defending state runner-up Holmes Bulldogs. Fans have kind of wondered how this game might have gone. Some were questioning how many dunks there would be, others questioned what the margin might be. After all, SK had only won 7 games for the season. Pass around the crow pie as the Pioneers fall by just 8 at a final of 55-47. I guess I should be guilty and have a piece myself because I didn’t expect the score to be that close. I watched Holmes play Highlands a couple of weeks ago and saw the most wicked dunk I have ever seen in a high school game as Pittman slammed a windmill dunk against Highlands in the closing minutes of the game. SK has no player over about 6’4” while Holmes has several guys in the "up to" 6’7” category.

When Holmes came out for warm-ups, they definitely looked somewhat arrogant as one of their players jawed with the SK student section. Once the ball was tipped Holmes went out to a quick lead. The Pioneers got 3 balls from Barnes and Ball to get back in the game. The teams were tied at 19 with about 3 minutes to go in the half. Holmes goes into intermission 27-19.

The boys played hard the rest of the game but just couldn’t get over the hump. They trailed by 4 with less than a minute. SK put Holmes at the line in the closing seconds which stretched the lead out to the final 8 point lead.

Granted, there are not morale victories but this game has to give the boys confidence going into the post season tournaments. They played tough and spirited against Scott last week and will hopefully perform well in the district, get on a run to make the 8th Region tourney at the Roy at Henry County. It is safe to say there is no team as talented as Holmes in the 8th so who knows what happens when the ball is tipped next week. A new season starts as everybody is 0-0 starting on Monday.

Good Luck Boys and and this senior class....
