Homecoming 2008

The Homecoming Parade and return of Powder Puff Football was part of the homecoming festivities tonight.

Quite honestly, there wasn't a lot of participation in the parade itself. New policies mandated by the Board meant that there were lots of rules to follow that made it difficult to put the traditional hay wagon of pulled by a pick-up truck in the parade. My guess is that the sponsors of the organization just didn't want to have to go through everything in order to comply with the rules. I could be wrong, but the football team itself wasn't even in the parade nor were any basketball, soccer, softball, or baseball teams. Since the participation of students was down, the parade route itself was not too full of parade goers who go out and watch their neighbors, friends and kids participate. Organizations like South Kenton usually participate as well but they too were absent this year. It is a shame that sometimes rules can kind of swing too far but our school's administrators were doing what they were required and I know that it was a lot more work on them. I was in Downtown Independence and after the last vehicle had passed, everyone standing around questioned whether the parade was over. Too bad we won't see kids riding on hay wagons, crate paper floats and utility trailers hanging out with their team and club mates using the parade as almost a pep rally in itself.

Powder Puff football returned to campus tonight. This used to be a fairly big event back in the 80's but it has been absent for years. A very nice sized crowd turned out to see two junior teams and two senior teams in a mini-tournament. The format was the juniors played the juniors and then the seniors played the seniors. The winners then played in the championship. The junior girls take the win in the returning tradition. It was a really nice night of fun for the students and the spectators.

A great job by everyone tonight in putting both events together. The game itself will be tomorrow night at 7:00 as the football team takes to Community Field in their first regular season game.
