During the varsity game, things started off well as the Pioneers controlled the ball for the first part of the half. A Villa counter attack ended up in an infraction against the Lady Pioneers. The Villa player hit the ball and put it in for the 1-0 Villa score. SK countered with some nice ball movement and a cross by Jillian Russell that was knocked in by Senior Samantha Kampsen for the tying score. Villa didn’t get down and came back and a shot that deflected off of a SK player that was tapped in for the 2-1 score that would hold up at half-time.
For the second game in a row, the Lady Pioneers came out and played hard in the second half getting a variety of shots and crosses off that were taken in by the Villa keeper who flat out put on a clinic. No matter what angle or type of shot fired, the Villa keeper was able to always pull in the ball. No scores were recorded for either team and the 2-1 half-time score ended up as the final.
For the night, SK outshot Villa by an astounding 40-7 margin. The Blue Lightning used only a couple of substitutions on the night as the first cool night of the season sat in over Independence. Villa comes out with the win and is looking strong for the number one district seed.
Soccer is a funny game. The ball didn’t bounce SK’s way but the team needs to put the last two games behind them and move on. SK visits Scott on Saturday in President’s Cup action.
