Pioneers Hit the Road in Friday Night Action

The Boys team headed south to Shelby County for a match-up with 8th Region rival Rockets while the girls traveled to Union for an NKAC match-up with the Ryle Raiders.

Pioneer Boys
The bus ride back was a cold and bitter one. The Pioneers lost to Shelby County on the road 58-54. The Pioneers were never ahead in this game and trailed at one point in the 3rd quarter by a score of 30-18.

Josh Elbert led the Pioneers with 24 points, 8 rebounds. Josh Hurd scored his 1000th career point at SK in the 4th quarter to bring the Pioneers to within 1 point when he hit a short turn-around jumper from short range. This made the game 48-49, but the Pioneers could never capture the lead. Josh also had 7 blocked shots in the game. Zach Layne missed the game because of illness.

The Pioneers will be back in action Monday night versus Campbell County in another road game.

The JV boys will be in action Saturday in the semi-final round versus St. Henry at Cov Cath at 1:30. They beat the Crusaders early in the year by 6, 56-50. The JV team goes into the action with a 15-1 record. They remain in the JV tournament with Boone County, St. Henry, and Scott. A win will put them in the finals Wednesday night.

Lady Pioneers
In girls action, the Lady Pioneers hammered the Lady Raiders by a final of 67-41. Lauren Conley knocked down a trey on the opening possession and the Pioneers never looked back. SK led by a score of 21-8 at the end of the first and enjoyed a 36-19 half-time lead.

SK had three girls in double figures with Farris, Tolliver and Conley scoring 18, 17 and 14 respectively. Conley connected on 4 of 7 long range shots and dished out 5 assists on the night.

The Lady Pioneers forced 21 Raider turnovers on the strength of 15 Blue Swarm steals with Conley, Figgins and Tolliver each having 3. SK converted the Ryle turnovers into 24 points compared to just 3 turnover points for the Raiders. The Lady Pioneers outrebounded the Raiders 38-24 led by Figgins with 7.

The Lady Pioneers take on Campbell County tomorrow night at the Joe for more NKAC action. SK is looking for its 20th win of the season.
