The Pioneers were ambushed today by a team that they should have beaten. Bell County, who came in to today's game with a record of 15-4, did not match up well against SK's height advantage. But when a team that shoots 62% for the game as SK did, that team will not survive if they throw the ball away 9 times in the last quarter.
Ponzer had a chance to tie the game at 57, but missed both ends of the double bonus. Also many chances to lay the ball in the basket were wasted throughout the game. SK could have salted the ball game away in the 3rd quarter, but became lax, and let a far less talented team get back and control the lead until the final horn.
SK lost 56-59 which brought the season record to 16-5 with six games left in the regular season. With games against quality teams like Shelby County and Cov Cath, they could end up with more losses than expected when they opened up the season.
Hurd ended up with 14 points, Elbert had 10. Both were named to the all-tourney Toyota Team.
SK next plays Dixie on Wed Jan 31 at Dixie, who also lost twice in the Toyota Tourney. Both Hopkins and Parrott are expected to return to the team after short stints on the disabled list. Hester is also expected to return in the near future.
