The Pioneers overcame an early morning illness which hit several members of the team to defeat Lincoln County 58-53 in the final game of the consolation bracket of the 5/3rd Holiday Tournament at Lex Cath.
To add insult to the injury list from the previous several games, many of the Pioneers spent the night with stomach cramps, apparently from eating the same food at a local pizza restaurant in Lexington. Injuries to Hester, Maegley, Parrott, and an earlier sickness to Layne put the Pioneers at a severe shortage of players. All have recovered except Hester who is day to day. Hurd even joined the injury list as he slightly turned his ankle during today's game.
Hurd, who was the only Pioneer to make the All Tournament Team, scored a team high 18 points as he found the Patriots height to his liking. The had at least 5" on the tallest Patriot which opened up the inside game.
Layne returned to the lineup to score 9. Nate Ponzer hit 2-3's and 4/4 from the free throw line. Backup center Brandon Maegley scored 9.
The Pioneers return to action on the 4th of January at Williamstown, and then face off against a tough Boone County on the 5th of January.
