The Lady Pioneers took on the Lady Eagles from Scott at the Joe tonight. SK struggled to get into any kind of offensive or defensive flow early on in the game. The Pioneers have been a team this year that has thrived when they have found a certain rhythm of letting their defense turn into offensive points. The Pioneers definitely did not play all that well and were looking up at a 9-9 tie after the first period.
Coach Stowers woke the defense up during the second quarter. The Pioneers were able to come up with several steals that led to transition baskets as SK started to come alive. The Lady Pioneers put 25 points on the board in the second quarter and went to the locker room with a 34-20 lead. The revived defense brought the flow to the game that the Pioneers needed. SK was able to force 25 Eagle turnovers that converted to 26 points for the Pioneers. The bulk of these turnovers were from the 18 steals that the Pioneers turned in.
The Pioneers scoring came from a balanced attack tonight. Lyndsay Figgins led SK with 15 and was able to knock down 4 treys. Junior Lauren Conley controlled the offense while netting 10 points and 6 assists. Conley slowed the offense down in the third quarter as SK became methodical with the basketball as they stretched the lead into the 20’s. Other scoring efforts included Kayla Smith with 9, Caitlyn Figgins with 8, Chelsea Tolliver with 8 and Jessica Farris with 7. The Pioneers did not shoot particularly well for the night but seemed to come up with baskets at key times.
SK won the rebounding battle against the taller Eagles by a 33-29 margin. The Pioneers actually went to the offensive glass and put 12 points on the board as a result of these rebounds. L. Figgins was the second Pioneer in a row to tally a double double as she posted 10 boards on the night.
The Lady Pioneers take a 5-0 record into the Northern Exposure tournament next week. SK will play 4 games in 4 days beginning at 6:30 on Wednesday at Notre Dame. The challenge for the Pioneers is a pretty tall order as they take on the NDA Pandas. SK also will play 12th region favorite Rockcastle County on Thursday at 6:30 at Notre Dame and then play undefeated Louisville Presentation on Friday at 5:00 at Boone County. SK’s Saturday game will depend on how they play in pool play and will also be played at Boone.
The Lady Pioneers JV team won a foul-fest with the Lady Eagles by a final score of 37-33. Both teams had players foul out during the contest. Highlights for the game included a Lauren Clemons NBA range 3 point shot at the 3rd quarter buzzer and AP Ponzer showing some serious wheels to break up a Scott fast break late in the game. Ponzer was also tackled one time out of bounds but got up to show some spunk.
