The Pioneer girls bball team hosted the Ryle Raiders in the
beginning of a stretch of NKAC games on Monday night. The underdog Raiders would jump out to a 7-0
lead before SK got their first bucket at the 4:40 mark. Coach Stowers was yelling for his team to
penetrate the gaps of the zone although they were content to pass on the
outside and shoot jump shots. SK would
turn to a press which got the tempo in their favor allowing their defense to
convert into offense, although they still trailed after one by a score of 10-12.
The Neers came out in the second quarter and turned their D
up a notch to disrupt Ryle. SK would
open the quarter on a quick 6-0 run and take a 16-12 lead . Teams would trade the lead throughout the
remainder of the quarter but SK wold lead 23-21 at the break.
Neer defense would open the third in a stingy manner as they
would jump out 35-23. Abby Owings would
get hot extending the SK lead to 40-26 as the junior guard would connect on
three treys in the period. The pace of
the game would quicken in the third as SK controlled the tempo. The score at the end of the third was 46-32
as the Neers solved any challenges they had with the zone.
One thing about the Neers tonight, they hustled. I can recall several plays where a SK player
out-willed the Ryle player for the ball.
SK would extend lead to 54-36 midway through the quarter. SK goes on to win 60-47 behind 17 points from
Abby Owings.
Boys B-ball Tuesday Night
The boys ball team hosted the Oldham County Colonels at the
Joe tonight ahead of the ice and snow.
OC scored the first 4 points before Barnes would score the next 4 points
for SK. Once Riley got SK on the
board, Jimmy Chitwood would show up for
SK in the form of Andrew Sampson and drop 5 treys in the bucket for the Neers-all
in the first quarter! SK would go up 25-10 behind 21 straight points
from Sampson. For whatever reason, the Colonels seemed content with playint zone. Not sure how many treys Sampson dropped before they came out of the zone but it was a bunch. Steiner would give Sampson
a break, but SK would extend the lead to 31-14.
SK would lead by 33-19 at half. Sampson would finish the half with 7 for 7 from the three point line.
Oldham would get things going in the second half with some
pesky man to man defense. Steiner would
then turn to senior Drew Reckner who would come in and hit two treys of his
own. Oldham would start heating up from
the outside and got the lead down to 11 at 47-36 before SK would score last 4
points and lead 51-36 at the end of three.
OC would open quarter on a 8-2 run to cut SK lead to single
digits at 53-44. OC run would continue, getting
the lead down to 8 before SK offense would get over their tentativeness on
offense and go up 65-49 with just two minutes to go. Steiner would call a TO and clear the bench
with one minute to go. SK wins
67-53. Jimmy with finishes game with 26
on the strength of 8 for 10 three point shooting.
The boys hit the road on Friday night for another game with
rival Grant County while the Neer girls take on the Pandas in Park Hills.
Prayers for Anna Cully who will have ACL surgery on Wednesday. Get well soon!
