The Pioneer football team was looking for its third win of
the season, eclipsing the win total of two from last year. The opponent
Friday night was the Pulaski County Maroons. What is a maroon? I asked about 6 different people and nobody
could really answer the question. The
best response came from one of the Pulaski County players who told me it was a
marooned pirate, as in stuck on an island.
Once the game started, there were two things that came
apparent ; the Maroons were overmatched in size up front and the depth of SK
would be an advantage as the game wore on.
The Neers would make the long drive back to Lake Cumberland country a
long one as SK comes out on top 50-7 as the Neers put up 7 TD’s for the night.
SK punted on its first possession but got on a roll after
that as the offense put together some nice drives through the air and on the
ground. The defense would hold the Roons
to no first half points and one touchdown as the game was put out of
reach. Andrew Sampson would run the ball
for 15 attempts and 69 yards with three attempts going for 6. In the air, Brennan Kuntz was 15 out of 19
for 205 yards, 2 touchdowns. Kuntz was
credited for an interception in the endzone but it was easily could have been
his 3rd TD of the game . One
player who looked good late in the game was Travis Bryson who ran the ball 7
times for 31 yards but moved the pile when he got the ball; downhill runs for
sure. Kyle Hefflin came in relief of
Kuntz and put up 99 yards passing in just about a quarter’s worth of work. Several Neers logged nice gains through the
air including Chris Hicks with 59 yards, Jacob Huseman with 50 yards, Timmy
Iles with 39 yards on a single catch.
Evan Meenach was the leading receiver with 65 yards and 1 TD. Kuntz found Meenach with not a sole around
him in the endzone on a broken play.
A nice attack heading into homecoming week with Holmes next
Friday.
