The SK football returned home tonight for the Skyline
Crosstown Showdown against the Beechwood Tigers. Beechwood put a 28-0 beat down
on the Neers last year that would set a tone for a 2011 SK season that would
only see two wins. The boys were hoping
to equal their win total from last year with a win against the Tigers after a
season opening win against Danville last week.
Things looked good early in the first quarter for SK as the
defense played inspired on the Tigers first possession as SK would force a Beechwood
punt. SK would then take the ball and
march down the field putting themselves in a position to put a field goal on
the board. However, the Tyler Smith kick
was blocked and Beechwood took over from there.
Beechwood would take their turn putting a 3 point attempt in the air; it
was good as the Tigers put the first points on the Board. SK would get the first TD on the board for
the night as Grant Wassom took a Brennan Kuntz pass down at the goal line for
the 6. The lead would be short lived as Beechwood would take the kickoff to the
Skyline VIP Tent in the north end zone.
The Beechwood TD would take the wind out of the SK sails; particularly
the defense as there just wasn’t a lot of aggressiveness being shown.
Beechwood would get another touchdown and take a 17-7 half-time lead.
The second half would start with the play that turned the
game around. Senior Jared Swanson would
take the kick-off and scamper 91 yards down the home bleachers for the score
bringing SK within a field goal. This
play seemed to energize the defense as much as anything; or maybe it was the
engaging half-time speech; either way, they looked like a totally different
unit. The SK line started getting a
better push up front allowing the SK running game to get going. Andrew Sampson would carry the ball 22 times
for 112 yards including the go ahead score for SK. Beechwood had a nice drive going that was
stopped by an interception by Drew Harris.
Beechwood could not get anything going as the SK defense wore down the
Tigers and held them scoreless for the second half although for the game,Beechwood
would outgain SK in yardage, 328 to 278 on offense.
Statistical leaders for SK; Kuntz was 8 for 14 for 117 yards with 1 TD and 1
interception. In addition to Sampson’s 112 yards, Kuntz
would run for 51 yards. Grant Wassom
would lead the receivers with 58 yards and the score.
The win puts SK at 2-0, matching their total wins for all of
last year; a nice start for the 2012 season.
Another big win for SK tonight as faculty members Gilbert
and Reinhart take down the Beechwood faculty in a Snappy Beast eating
contest. SK’s finest put down nearly an
entire Beast pizza in 10 minutes time.
