The Lady Pioneers soccer team traveled to Holy Cross and Eva G. Farris Field for a match up with their northern county rivals. The Pioneers were coming off of a one week plus layoff as the last time they suited up for live game action was on August 29th. The field, located at the old Rosedale Park was quite swampy as the northern part of the county took on several inches of rain last night.
The Pioneers started off the game looking strong and took the ball to the Indian defense early on. SK was unable to capitalize on an early corner kick and several shots. Holy Cross countered with a few attacks of their own. Suddenly, it looked like a little rust might have set in on the Pioneers as some of the momentum they gained in their last few games might have slipped some. Goalkeeper Ashley Repka would make an awesome sliding save as she was caught in a position to take on not one, but two Indian attackers. Repka went at the right time and came up with the ball. The Indians would find the back of the net first with 20 minutes to go in the half after the Pioneers failed to clear the ball out of the box. The 1-0 lead would hold up until half.
The teams started the second half with a lot more back and forth action. Any shots that the Lady Eers took seemed to sail about 10 yards over the top of the goal. Coach Jones then moved sweeper Ali Ponzer up to striker on the right side with Katie Z on the left with 25 minutes to go in the game. The extra speed put a lot more pressure on the Holy Cross defense. Central midfielder Jessie Cooper found Ponzer on the right side of the box and the left footed shot from Ponzer tied the game with 20 minutes to go in the match. SK would score again 5 minutes later when Ponzer would break on a direct free kick from Cooper for an easy score. SK goes up 2-1 for the final score.
A scary moment happened with 5 minutes to go in the game when Repka came off the goal line and slid trying to break-up the Indians chance to tie the game. Repka would have a tough collision with her opponent and they both came up bleeding. Ashley broke her nose and required stitches. Ashley is as tough as they come but we certainly lift her up in our prayers as she heals. Get well soon Ashley!!!
