Saturday Hoop Action

The Pioneer girls and boys basketball teams took to action today. The girls played at Highlands against Rockcastle County in the Vi Gerding Classic featuring top teams from across Kentucky also including Highlands, Boone County, Oldham, Notre Dame, Lex Cath and Lexington Christian. Rockcastle was ranked in the top 20 of most polls. SK comes out on top in overtime by a final of 58-52 in overtime. SK outscored the Rockets 9-3 in the extra frame with the bulk of those points coming from the line. The win wasn’t particularly pretty but the girls showed some guts in eeking out the win. As they say, a win is a win. The Pioneers were without the services of Chelsea Tolliver who was ill. I didn’t get the scoring but it appeared to be pretty balanced across the board. The girls have their home opener on Tuesday against Dixie and enter with a 2-0 record.

Meanwhile, it was out to Hebron tonight for the boys game. The boys fall to Conner by a final of 64-51. SK trailed by as many as 20 in the second half but then battled back to trail just by two at 49-47. The Pioneers appeared to have a lot of good momentum going but they got outscored 15-4 to close the game Casey Sorrell led the Pioneers with 23 points while Langdon Barnes pitched in 17.
