As we traveled down I-75 tonight, I took note of many Kenton County license plates headed south. I thought, wow, must be a lot of people going down for the UK season opener against VMI. Nope, they were headed to Lexington Lafayette High School for the football game. The Pioneers brought a tremendous amount of support to Lexington tonight. If you weren’t there, you might be surprised to hear that there were more fans on the SK side of the stadium than on the Lafayette side. Not even close and the fans that were there were in to the game and loud.
The last time the Pioneers won a playoff game, most of the current Pioneers were either in diapers or not even born. The year was 1993 which would put the senior class at 2 years old at the time. The boys from Indy played like they belonged in the Kentucky state playoffs as they manhandled the Lexington City Champs. SK got on the board on their first possession as Miles Simpson got the TD. SK would put 19 first half points on the board to the Generals zippo.
One of the biggest plays of the first half had to be Jordan Wilson rushing for about 20 yards and literally carried half of the General defense for several of those yards. Another big play in the second quarter happened when Simpson got lost at the line of scrimmage by the General defense. Lawrence hit Simpson with the screen pass and Simpson was gone. Simpson dove in from about three yards out flying through the air with two Generals on his back. They all hit with a loud thud but not before Miles snuck inside the pylon. SK finished the half by putting up one of their recently patented goal-line stands. The Generals ended up settling for a field goal attempt that was no good. Simpson finished the half with all three SK TD’s.
Nick Brown scored a TD on SK’s opening possession of the third quarter. After the defense held again, things started to get a little interesting. SK fumbled a punt which gave the Generals just enough momentum to end up scoring their only TD of the game. Lafayette then kicked an on-side kick that they recovered. Again, SK defense got in gear and held and there was never really any panic but you just had to wonder if SK’s playoff luck was going to surface. Simpson would score his fourth touch down which put the game way out reach.
The Pioneers played well in all phases of the game. The offense scored fairly easily with big plays from Simpson and Wilson at the right time, the defense made big stands and plays when they had to and the special teams unit put all kinds of pressure on the kicking game. Interesting tidbit was this was the last game at the stadium that will be razed for a new facility.
Coach Marksberry and Herbst got an ice bath that was another direct hit. I’m sure it was a cold ride back to Independence but one that had to be very satisfying. Congratulations to the entire football program!!!!
