During warm-ups, SK actually looked a little up-tight. Just some nerves going from finally getting to play someone other than the girls you play against every day. Once Kayla Smith got the tip though, the Pioneers looked pretty strong. Smith got the Eers on the board first as SK raced out to a nice lead and held on for the first half win by a score of 18-13. (Games are divided into two running 15 minute clocks.) Central gained a little momentum at the end of the half that continued in the second half. SK fell behind by about 7 but it actually seemed to get them playing not as tight. Coach Stowers called for a press that provdied a few quick SK buckets. Chelsea Tolliver and Sydni Wainscott converted a couple of drives to the basket and Caitlyn Figgins converted an old fashioned three point play and SK was back in the game. The two teams ended up tied for the second period at 24.
I thought the Lady Pioneers looked pretty good for their first outing. They seemed to push the ball pretty well and got some transition baskets. The defense is coming together and the offense is shaking the rust.
Finally, tonight marked the return of Lyndsay Figgins to a Pioneer basketball game for her first significant minutes since January, 2007. She didn’t have the offensive game she was looking for in her return to action but she looked like her old self in several other phases of the game. Welcome back Fig, I’ve missed watching you play.
