Lady Pioneer Basketball Just Around the Corner

This has to be the slowest week in SK sports this week with the football team having a “BYE” tomorrow.

Meanwhile at the Joe, the basketball teams are shaking off the rust and getting back into action. The girls actually will play in their first scrimmage game of the season next Saturday, November 15th at the Scott County Hoopfest in Georgetown. The Lady Pioneers are playing Madison Central. For a complete schedule, see http://scottcountysports.olinesports.com/

Of course, SK is coming off their first regional title in the history of the program. The Lady Pioneers have their sites on returning to the state tournament at Diddle Arena. The team is ranked as the top team in the 8th Region. A top ranking may be a measure of a team’s talent but does little more than put a target on the team’s back.

Coach Jeff Stowers brings an experienced team to the floor this year with five seniors on the roster. Kayla Smith, Chelsea Tolliver and Lyndsay and Caitlyn Figgins have been in the program since they were 8th graders at Twenhofel and know the SYSTEM. (Olivia Bach is the other senior.) Sophomore Sydni Wainscott will likely take over the point guard duties and got valuable experience during tournament time last year. Some of the other Pioneers who made the trip to Diddle last year and return to the team this year include Kristen Pace, Nicki Brown, Brionna Jones, Ali Ponzer, and Kayla Blevins.

The rest of the coaching staff includes Brenden Stowers, who is the assistant varsity coach, Chris Barwell who is the JV coach and Kristin Steiner who is the Freshman coach.

One of the highlights of the season will be the Pioneers participation in the Lexington Catholic Holiday Classic which draws some of the top teams from around the state.

The Lady Pioneers will have an excellent chance if they can stay healthy and play together. Good Luck to the entire Lady Pioneer Program!
