SK started the game off on a strong note as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The lead didn’t last as Lauren Jones from SO heated up and connected on a couple of threes. An offensive rebound and put-back by the Dragons and SK was looking at a 13-6 deficit, which ended up as the score of the end of the first quarter. SK jacked up several long range shots which failed to connect in the quarter. The Pioneers were definitely ice cold and things were not looking favorable at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Senior Lauren Conley came out in the second quarter and finally got the Pioneers long range shooting going as she hit a shot from about 22 feet. The second quarter took on the look of a defensive battle as both teams struggled to score. Chelsea Tolliver picked up her second foul and went out of the game without any points on the board. SK locked down SO and didn’t allow the Dragons to score their first field goal until 3:26 to go in the quarter. The Lady Pioneers were scoring more than SO but weren’t exactly scorching the nets. SK came back and tied the game at 16 with a minute and a half to go on a drive and a bucket by Sidney Wainscott. SK regained the lead with 49 seconds in the half at 18-16 which ended up being the score at the intermission. The quarter ended with a strange play. Oldham's Jones lowered her head and looked as if she committed an offensive foul. She was called for a travelling violation but ended up cutting her brow and ended up needed attention from the trainers. She never made it to the Dragon lockerroom. SK played an awesome quarter on the defensive end by allowing only one field goal and one free throw by SO.
The Pioneers came out of half time and got a nice back door play to Jessica Farris. SK got a stop and came back down and got another bucket from Farris on a shot that rolled around the rim and fell through the net. Chelsea Tolliver made an old fashioned three point play and SK was up 25-16. Tolliver then connected on back to back three’s to extend the lead to 31-16. SO didn't get their first field goal until the 5:19 mark of the quarter. Both teams basically traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter and SK led by a score of 37-25. The Pioneers held the Dragons to single digits in the third as well.
The Pioneers were looking good going into the last frame with a double digit lead. Their game plan was to work the ball but not necessarily try to kill the clock. Their game plan worked to perfection. To start the fourth, Conley connected on a three after working almost two minutes off of the clock. SK went down and got a stop. The Pioneers worked the ball again and Farris connected for a three. SK went down and got another stop. This time, SK came down and got a three off of the fastbreak by Wainscott. SK was on a 9-0 run and up 46-25 before SO got a foul shot by Jones. Coach Stowers went to a four guard offense at 3:47 in the half. The Pioneers were able to take care of the ball and eat of the clock the rest of the quarter to seal the win.
The difference in this game was in the Pioneers defensive effort as they only allowed the Dragons to score 12 points total in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. The other thing that seemed to happen was the Dragons ran out of gas after coming out with a lot of intensity in the first half. This allowed the Pioneers to start building momentum that carried throughout the second half.
