The SK girls soccer team made a trip to Ft. Thomas for a triple header with Highlands. It was also senior night for Highlands.
The Freshman team played tough and put a tie on the board. The JV team played a ton of defense but Highlands struggled to score against some strong net tending by Taylor Secrist. Highlands was able to get a late goal on the board for the 1-0 win.
The varstiy team finally got to take the field around 8:00 after the festivities for the 9 Highlands seniors. The SK girls came out and played their hearts out. Highlands got one first half goal off of a set play. The Pioneers nearly tied in the second half when an absolutely beautiful cross by Krista Russell was almost kicked in by her sister Jillian. Two unbelievable stops by the Highlands keeper kept the score from occurring. Highlands was able to get additional scores on the board late in the game. This, however, was one of the classic games where the game was closer than the score.
The loss snaps the Pioneers 4 game win streak. The girls played hard and gave a great effort. They didn't play passively and worry that they were playing the two time defending state champs. I remember the team playing over there two years ago and watching the ball cross the SK attacking half of the field for just a chance or two. That didn't happen tonight. If the second half goal attempt goes in, who knows how the momentum changed.
