It certainly wasn't pretty but it was a win! The Lady Pioneers struggled to put the ball in the basket but played their hearts out to come away with a 50-47 win at Covington Holmes in overtime. SK stopped Holmes defensively by forcing 28 turnovers but had trouble converting on the offensive end. The nemesis tonight was three point and free throw shooting. The Lady Pioneers have rarely seen a zone this season because of their excellent perimeter shooters. For whatever reason tonight, the Pioneers simply could not capitalize on several good looks at the basket.
SK actually came out and was playing strong and raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first. They continued to lead by a score of 12-6 until Christina Weaver connected on a shot from the three point line in the back court at the first quarter buzzer-a shot estimated at about 55 feet. That shot seemed to take some wind out of the Pioneer sails and they took a one point lead into half-time. SK came out in the third quarter and surrendered the lead to the Bulldogs. Holmes led for most of the half but SK was able to get some defensive stops that turned into lay-ups and now SK was back on top. Holmes showed a great deal of heart as well and came back to tie the game. The Bulldogs chose to hold the ball with a minute to go and was looking for the last second shot. They turned the ball over to Lauren Conley who got a lay-up that wouldn't fall. SK ran an inbounds play with .3 of a second left but was unable get off a shot and the game went to OT. SK jumped on Holmes to take a 4 point lead in OT. However, Holmes came back. Holmes had the ball with less than 10 seconds to go trailing by a point when Lyndsay Figgins came up with a steal and was finally able to connect on the foul shots to extend the lead to three. Holmes actually got off a three point shot that could have tied the game but it bounced around the rim and fell out for the SK win.
The Pioneers were led in scoring by Chelsea Tolliver with 20. Lyndsay Figgins was the other double figure scorer at 16. Rebounding was close for the game at 51-46 as Kayla Smith grabbed 10 boards for SK.
The Pioneers shot less than 30% from the field and only 50% from the foul line. They seemingly just played tight which snowballed throughout the game.
In JV action, the Lady Pioneers lost their first game of the season by a final of 43-38.
