Walton Verona’s game plan was to control the tempo and slow the game down. They controlled the ball off of the opening tap and ran nearly two minutes off of the clock before they even looked to score. SK seemed to get somewhat frustrated with the slow tempo and made some fouls that put some key players on the bench in the first half. The score at the end of the first was 9-9. Walton outscored SK by 19-16 in the second and led the game at half- 28-25. Allen Clark came off the bench to knock down two first half treys to keep it that close. At one point, SK trailed the Bearcats by 8. The Pioneers got several good shots in the paint during the first half that just wouldn’t fall.
SK tried working the ball inside more in the third quarter to Hurd more. They also tried control the tempo to their advantage. SK tied the game at 42 with 2:30 in the third and took the lead at 44-42 at the end of the quarter. Josh Hurd and Frank Daughtery from Walton both fouled out in the second half. Even though Daughtery fouled out first, Walton got energized when Hurd went out. Walton trailed by 55-50 with 2:24 left in the game. The Pioneers were able to convert some transition baskets and stretch the lead to double digits down the stretch but the game was definitely closer than the 12 point final margin.
SK was led in scoring by Hurd with 13. Zach Layne added 12, Eric Hopkins 11 and Allen Clark came up with 8 points, which all seemed to hit at the right time. SK shot 48.9% from the field and 5 for 10 from the distance line. Foul shots were problematic again as the Pioneers connected on just 14 out of 27.

Elbert sitting down on defense trying not to get picked.
#44 played tough and led all scorers with 14. Hurd tries to slow him from going to the basket.
Time for some sit-ups at a break in the action.
