SK Boys Knock off Cru in Season Opener.

Simon Kenton Coach Trent Steiner lost his suit jacket at the 6 minute mark of the first quarter at the Joe in Independence tonight. It was for good reason. His Pioneer squad, laden with high expectations for the season, looked sloppy and out of synch for most of the first half as the visiting Cru from St. Henry led the Pioneers throughout the first half. Coach Steiner tried multiple substitutions but was unable to find the right combination to get the Pioneers on track. SK trailed at the end of the first quarter by a score of 15-11 and at halftime by 32-26. The Pioneer faithful seemed concerned at half-time about their team which is ranked preseason number one in the 8th region.

Whatever the coaching staff had to say at half-time worked. The Pioneers came out blazing as they jumped on St. Henry at the start of the third quarter with Eric Hopkins hitting key baskets and Mike Hester and Josh Elbert with lay-ups. SK matched their point total for the whole first half by posting 26 on the scoreboard while holding the Cru to 8. Hester missed several drives to the basket in the first half that he usually converts but he found his game in the second half and finished on 9 of 16 shooting for a game high 27 points. Hester also added 5 assists, 2 steals and 4 rebounds. Josh Elbert had a team high 8 rebounds and connected on 3 treys in 3 attempts. Senior Josh Hurd connected on 6 out of 8 shots and finished with 13 points. For the game, the Pioneers connected on 8 out of 16 three point shots and 28 out of 50 field goals. The Pioneer defense held St. Henry to 18 of 49 in the field goal department. The final score from the Joe tonight was SK 73 and St. Henry 57.
