SK PIONEER SPORTS: SK takes on Scott in President's Cup Action

SK versus Scott in President's Cup. Simon holds up the trophy for the Girls Varsity. It was the first time in more than three years that the Girls Varstiy claimed the trophy.

What a day of soccer at the annual President's Cup competition between SK and Scott. The boys and girls JV and Varsity teams play for a trophy that stays with the winning team. Something new to the Cup festivities this year was the addition of Freshman games. The Freshman Girls kicked off at 11:00 and the Varsity Boys wrapped up late tonight. A long day of soccer, but a fun day for rivals to come together and take each other on out on the pitch. Most of the players on the field have played at one time or another for the Independence Soccer Club.

Unfortunately, the day was marred by several injuries giving SK Athletic Trainer Nick Repka more than a workout running out on the field. In one serious injury, sophomore Chris Hahnel had to be taken from the field by ambulance and underwent sugery for a seriously broken arm this evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris as he recovers.

In Freshman action, the Lady Pioneers bested the Lady Eagles. In Freshman Boys game, the Eagles won on PK's in a shootout.

JV Action saw the SK girls fall to Scott in a PK Shootout. Taylor Secrist threw the shutout for regulation but the Eagles put on a PK shooting clinic in the shootout to claim the victory. The JV boys lost to the Eagles in a hard fought game.

Varsity Girls action involved the Lady Pioneers as a slight underdog laying claim to the Cup once again. The Lady Pioneers put a goal on the board in each half for the 2-0 victory. The first goal was scored by Junior Stephanie Cagle on a head-ball off of a direct free kick by Krista Russell. The Pioneers second goal was also scored by Cagle from an assist and hustle play by Briana Marti. Senior Sara Kelly made several key saves down the stretch that preserved the win for the Pioneers. She had lots of nice D in front of her that helped knotch the shut-out. Lady Pioneers Liz Reilly and Marie Cooper saw action once again tonight after both had missed several games due to injury.

In the night-cap game involving varsity boys, the referees dealt more cards than a Texas Hold'Em tourney. The Pioneers fell 3-2 on a goal in the last minute by Scott. To call this game hard fought would be an understatement. The players left everything they had on the field. Senior Jon Schadler left the field on crutches with a suspected broken leg.

Sophomore Krista Russell is putting together a really nice season. She had an assist on the firs goal of the game for the Varsity Pioneers that was scored by Junior Stephanie Cagle.
