Double Dip at the Joe with Camels

Owings goes for 1,000 on career, Ayers Scores on Sr Night

The Joe was home to a rare boy/girl double header tonight as the varsity teams hosted the Campbell County Camels on a weeknight affair.  It was also a special night as the girl’s team wore pink and raised money for breast cancer research and the boy’s team celebrated their last home game for a group of 9 special seniors.

The girls came out in a press and completely overwhelmed the Camels.  SK jumped out to a 22-2 lead and cruised from there.  Abby Owings turned in a phenomenal game tonight as she seemed to play with an extra degree of speed while still being in control.  She had several nice defensive plays that helped her cruise to a cool 26 points including 8 in a 90 second portion of the second quarter.  Those points put her over 1,000 for her career.  Congrats Abby!  SK goes on to score a whopping 85 points as the Camels put up only 58.

The boys team welcomed 8 players and one Team Manager out on the floor before the game.  A great group of student athletes that have been a lot of fun to watch over the last 4 years.

The game started off with an awesome moment as Coach Steiner inserted Senior Nick Ayers into the starting line-up.  Ayers suffered an ACL tear in preseason practice and underwent reconstructive surgery as a result.  SK got the wink-tip and after a couple of passes got the ball to Ayers who banked in a shot from the left side for 2 points.   It is always a bad deal when a kid who loves a sport misses a season due to injury but it is even tougher when that season is their senior year.  Nick always seems to still have a smile on his face and is there supporting his team.  He’s always the last in the locker room at half-time not because he can’t jog off with his team but because he’s at the water cooler bringing as many cups of as he can carry to his teammates in the locker room.  That tells me a lot about leadership of a person even at a high school age.  Keep up the work of your recovery Nick!

Back to the game.  SK loses in overtime by a score of 67-61 on overtime.  SK trailed by 4-6 points throughout the game.  They finally clawed back and took the lead in the fourth quarter.  They went up by two with just over 10 seconds to go in the game but the Camels came back to tie with 4 seconds left.  Steiner got the timeout and appeared to have a play that looked good developing but an errant dribble sent the game to OT.  SK went up by two and had the ball but couldn’t get a bucket that would have given them command of the game.  The Camels were more poised and hit their shots down the stretch as the boys lose a tough one on senior night.

A big game was turned in by hard hat Taylor Morrison off the SK bench.  The junior scored 18 points on the strength of 6 for 7 shooting.  Morrison also led the Neers in rebounds pulling down 8 for the night.  Morrison, along with Andrew Sampson, led SK with 18 points.
Morrison and Owings making a steal; both get the nod for hard hat on the night.
