Lady Pioneers Best Indians in Varsity and JV Action

The SK Lady Pioneers JV and Varsity teams bested the Holy Cross Indians at Rosedale Field tonight. The JV team won by a score of 2-0 and the Varsity team won by a final of 3-1. Both teams improved their records to 2-1 on the season. The Holy Cross game has special meaning to many of the girls who played club soccer together for several years. SK has played Holy Cross every season since 2002 but had not experienced a victory in that timeframe.

The Varsity goals came from Allie Ponzer from about 25 yards out, Hannah Klee on a header from a beautiful cross from Krista Russell, and Jessie Cooper off some nice ball movement in the penalty area. Klee’s textbook goal was her first varsity score. Coaches and teammates promptly nicknamed her Headball Hannah for her perfect placement of the ball into the back of the net.

SK used a lot of substitutions, especially in the central midfield with the law firm of Cooper, Cooper, Needlander and Figgins, to seemingly wear down the Indians. The SK girls held off a second half charge from the Indians as the Holy Cross goal provided a shot of energy. Super strong effort from the Pioneer defense down the stretch with O, Blur, Rei and Steady Eddie helped preserve the win for SK.

The Lady Pioneers next play two state ranked teams with New Cath visiting Meneffee Stadium on Wednesday and Brossart on Saturday and Pendrey Park.
