WOW!!!! SK girls come out absolutely fired up and played their best v’ball of the year as they take down a very solid South Oldham Dragon (SO) team in four sets at Shelby County in their opening round match tonight. SO finished the regular season ranked 19th in the state coach's poll.
The Neers were cutting up and having fun before the match as they formed a circle and took turns dancing. Not sure what you call that but they were loose, having fun but at the same time very much had their minds on what they wanted to do; win against one of the better teams in the region.
The excitement the girls brought to the floor carried them to the first set win. Both teams remained close throughout the set but SK got on a run to finish with a 25-20 win.
SK fell behind 4-0 in the second but came roaring back with 7 straight. SO would tie at 7. Teams traded back and forth until SO went up 19-16. Coach Atwood called a timeout and reigned in her Neers who then went on to tie the score at 21. SO would regain their mo and claim the second set by a score of 25-23.
The third set was a thriller. It looked like SK was going to run off and leave the Dragons. SK would jump out to an immediate 7-2 and 10-5 lead. SK went on a nice run of racking up points behind several nice serves by Ellie Smith to go up 20-12. SO is a good team and didn’t quit. SO got their game together and came flying back and closed within 2 at 20-22. Coach Atwood called a time out and but SO continued their run going up 23-22. The teams traded points and ties. Junior Kaitlin Murray dug in her running shoes and closed out the game with two gigantic kills as SK takes the pivotal set by a 28-26 score.
With SK having some serious mo on their side, it really didn’t seem like they weren’t going to win the match as they went into the 4th set. SK went up 7-5 after Dunner returned a ball over her head after a big kill attempt from SO bounced off a SK player and ricocheted off the Commonwealth Bank and Trust scoreboard. SK would hold onto leads of 2-4 points throughout the set as they closed out the win by a final of 25-22. The team continues to play their best ball of the year. Key stats for the night:

Kudos go out to the entire volleyball program. All teams made the trip and was the 7th man in the stands between a raucous bunch of parents led by the Dunn Bunch. While the SK fans in the stands were small in number; they were the loudest in the Rocket gym.
The girls travel back to Shelbyville for the Regional Semifinals versus Anderson County on Wednesday night. Come on down and support the Neers; just about 1 hour and 15 minutes by taking 71 South to Exit 32; turn left off the exit and take that road to 55. Turn right on 55 and go south to Shelbyville. Once in Shelbyville, turn left on 60 and you are there.

I close on a downer as I heard the boys soccer team lost in double overtime to Oldham County by a score of 2-1. Great season guys!

Rock paper scissors. Seriously, look how much room between the backline and the non-padded wall. Pardon my commentary but no way a regional tourney should be played on such a set-up. Not only a disadvantage for the team on the short end of the floor but also dangerous.
On the other hand, look how much space is on the other side of the court. The volleyball court is basically sandwiched into just half the gym. Saralyn Callahan has to go to the other end to get a loose ball during the match.

Murray has taken her game up a level in the tourneys as she is killing the ball from all over the floor. She led SK with 20 kills tonight! Almost seems like there are springs in those running shoes.
