SK PIONEER SPORTS: Pioneers with First L of the Season; What a Change...

It sure is easy to get used to that thrill of victory. However, whenever your team loses, the taste of defeat isn’t so sweet and almost stings with a vengeance that erases the memory of any winning streak. SK falls tonight to a Henry Clay team by a final score of 42-31 and is now 3-1 on the season. The team from Lexington came through with better execution and made a fewer mistakes. Even though SK didn’t play all that well, they stayed within a reasonable strking margin throughout the game.

It wasn’t that long ago that when you took in some Friday night lights in the big town of Independence that you did so because you just loved the game and wanted to enjoy the fall air filled with flying Wilsons. Getting to see the Pioneers win at a less than full Meneffee Stadium was something that fit the definition of rare. For those that are old enough to remember, SK would typically schedule a single A school for homecoming. (Is it me or did it always seem like it was Dayton.) During several of these seasons, it was usually this win that accounted for the lone W of the year. On the flipside, it seemed like the Pioneers played all of their road games as part of homecoming festivities throughout the Northern Kentucky Community no matter what month that was showing on the calendar- August through November.

The losing sentiment has certainly changed the last couple of years. Playoffs, win streaks, favorite, ranked and full house are all words that fans have been accustomed to when talking about the local gridiron boys. Alumni not seen on the campus in years now show up to crowd along the black fence in the north endzone to watch a winning team that almost seemed like an impossibility during seasons past. Now when the Pioneers football team suffers a loss, it pastes the look of surprise on the faces of the blue clad fans. What a change.

One of my favorite Lou Holtz quotes describes this year’s team pretty well. He said, “you're never as good as everyone tells you when you win, and you're never as bad as they say when you lose.” That’s pretty accurate for this team. Although the boys lost tonight, I still look forward to the next game rushing from my daughter’s soccer practice to sprint down to the field with by camera to start firing off pictures.
