Here are some thoughts about the game:
It was cold; the game temps were in the 20’s. The Gatorade bottles were freezing, the training table and field had a layer of frost before the second half started. Players huddled around the kerosene heaters in between series. It didn’t seem to matter to the Indy faithful as they came out in strong numbers again. If you stayed home because it was too cold, you blundered by not going.
Miles Simpson is a player. He is fast, strong and powerful and just about any other adjective you can use to describe a dominant high school football player. I am not sure how many yards he had but he did ring up 6 Touchdowns for the game. Simply put, Conner couldn’t stop him. Even on broken plays, he made something happen. When he was stopped, the Cougars felt it as he often sent them flying backwards. You just kind of had the feeling that if he had the ball in his hands, that the Pioneers were going to move the football. He had tons of carries, took tons of hits and never put the ball on the ground despite the cold temps. I have pictures tonight of several Cougars around Simpson but yet, two frames later, he is in the open. It will be interesting to hear the final numbers for his yards but it had to be in the 250 range. It has been awhile since there has been a player that is this fun to watch not just at SK but in all of Northern Kentucky.
SK played solid football. They didn’t turn the ball over and had two Conner takeaways that they took in for scores.
The team who had the ball last was going to win this game. Zach Thomas recovered an onside kick for SK with just over a minute to go. SK ran three plays and then on 4th down, Conner jumped offsides which gave the Eers a first down. SK was able to run out the clock and make sure they were the last team with the ball.
Both Pioneer Quarterbacks were awesome tonight. Chad Lawrence went out of the game in the 3rd quarter after suffering an apparent concussion. He was having a great game leading his team. Senior Pat Bustle came in and played like a senior leader should. He was a beast and was tough to bring down. Once he was stopped, he got his backed turned to the defender and drove them back. We will certainly pray for Chad as he recovers from the hit he took tonight and possible concussion.
Conner was tough and fun to watch. Congrats to them on a nice season. They throw the ball more than any high school team you will find. Once SK scored, it didn’t take long for Conner to score. Several of their scoring drives were less than a minute. Their QB is a tough player. SK got burned by him and his core of receivers. I have to say great job with the offense to Coach Delph.
This was definitely one of those games where it was too bad to see a team lose because both teams played their hearts out.
SK will be playing after Thanksgiving. My guess instead of cooking steak this week that Greg Thomas will be cooking the boys some Turkey on Thursday.
Congrats again to the entire program. The ride has been fun and we hope you keep it going.
Make sure you get all of your shopping out of your system next Friday and that you have plans for Blue Friday.
