FLATWOODS — Last year’s finish against Simon Kenton still has the tendency to give Russell coach Ivan McGlone a headache.A face-mask penalty against the Red Devils as time expired set up Bryan King’s 31-yard field goal, allowing Simon Kenton to escape with a 42-41 victory and derail Russell’s 34-game home winning streak.“We kick a field goal to go ahead with 11.8 seconds left, and we don’t win the game,’’ McGlone said Wednesday afternoon while watching the film before practice.

Russell will try to make amends Friday night when the teams meet in northern Kentucky.Simon Kenton, a Class 6A school located in Independence, is 3-4 this season after losing 42-7 last week to Boone County.McGlone, however, is wary of the Pioneers — especially after how many points they put on the scoreboard last October in Henry R. Evans Stadium. “They were pretty good and several of those guys are back,’’ McGlone said. “They threw the ball well, and they can still throw it.’’

Quarterback Pat Bustle is back at the offensive controls for Simon Kenton, but the wide-open attack is relying more on a ground game featuring Miles Simpson.The sophomore running back has already gained 1,017 yards, with 15 of his 98 carries reaching the end zone. Most of Simpson’s playing time last year against Russell came as a defensive back.“He has good speed,’’ McGlone said. “From what I’ve seen, he likes to run out of the tailback spot. They do some zone blocking, and he will kick it outside and go.’’

Another running back, junior T.J. Dawalt, is next on the team with three touchdowns. Bustle, meanwhile, is 35-of-72 through the air for 475 yards. He has only two TD passes compared with four interceptions.Simpson managed only 28 yards rushing on 10 carries against Boone County, ranked fourth in Class 6A this week. Bustle was 4-for-13 with two interceptions.“Boone is good and kind of got on them early,’’ said McGlone, whose Red Devils will try to interrupt Simon Kenton’s season-long trend of alternating losses and wins. “Simon Kenton, being at the 6A level, is going to have athletes. Hopefully, we will come out on top this time.’’

Russell’s Drew Abrams, averaging 115.6 yards rushing per game, had a big night against the Pioneers as a junior. The Red Devils are 6-1 after cruising past Lewis County 34-0 last Friday.
