SK came out and went up on Walton by a 10-2 score before 2 minutes had even expired in the first quarter. The game was never even close. Walton called their first timeout at the 5:35 mark in the first quarter. SK then came out in a 1-3-1 half-court zone. Walton had trouble getting the ball past their three point line on offense. Sidney Wainscott hit a three at the end of the first and SK led by a 28-8 score. There was too much defensive intensity for Walton and they looked overwhelmed. Walton did make a 8-0 run to start the second quarter but then started allowing the Pioneers to convert multiple fastbreaks to open the game back up as Tolliver, Farris and Wainscott all got points off of the break. The lead swelled back to 38-16. SK led at the intermission by a 44-21 score. Chelsea Tolliver posted 20 points in the first half alone. Tolliver led all scorers with 26 for the game.
SK opened up the second half with three more runouts and lay-ups by Tolliver. SK was scoring easily but really didn't have to run their offense to score. Walton really didn't try and stop many of the fast breaks from occurring.
The final score was 65-39. Coach Stowers finished the game by getting almost everyone into the action and showed good sportsmanship by not trying to run the score up on the Bearcats.
Tolliver was named the tournament's MVP and was joined on the all tourney team by Farris and Conley.
Things get a little tougher next week ast the Lady Pioneers travel to Shelbyville and Shelby County High School for the 8th Region tourney. SK will get one of the other district runners-up.
Interesting development in the 29th District as South Oldham lost to Oldham County in the District Final. South Oldham finished as the Regional runner-up last year and was being touted as one of the favorites to win the 8th this year. This means the Pioneers will have a chance of playing the Dragons in the opening round. The draw for the pairings will take place this weekend.
