The Pioneers trailed the Colonels by 9 at half-time. That intermission score didn’t really seem astounding as some were probably expecting a Cov Cath onslaught against the beat up Pioneers. The SK boys came out in the second half and played with heart and enthusiasm. The Pioneers had success getting the ball into Maegley. When he didn’t get a shot to go, Robinson and Dressman were crashing the glass and getting put backs. Layne and Slavey did a nice job of controlling the offense against the Cov Cath pressure. SK put three players in double figures with Maegley, Slavey and Robinson scoring 22, 12 and 10 respectively. Layne only scored 4 points in the game but none was bigger than his spinning jumper with less than 3 seconds left to send the game into the extra frame. The Pioneers outrebounded the Colonels by a 29-27 margin. The thing that seemed to cost the Pioneers down the stretch was free throws. SK connected on just 9 of 18 throws.
This was a very well played game by SK. They played with a lot of determination down the stretch and could have easily come away with the win. This is definitely a game where it was disappointing to see Steiner’s bunch lose but it also showed the team what they are capable of accomplishing. The timing right before Districts next week very well could be pivotal down the stretch. SK can definitely make a nice run if they can duplicate tonight’s effort. Great job players and coaches.
