Our Best

Things are a little slow in the SK sports world so I thought someone might like this tip.

There is nothing like Kentucky High School basketball in terms of tradition and excitement. Some will say that sport’s purest form is down at the high school level where there still exists a passion for the game itself. There is another passion that many Kentuckians share. Bluegrass Music or Horse Racing you say. How about good old fashioned down home Kentucky eating.

T. Hopp’s dad put me on some good old fashioned eating at a place in Smithfield, Kentucky called Our Best Restaurant. Smithfield is about 7 miles off of Interstate 71 and is so small that the directions and address couldn’t be found on the navigation system in my car. Our Best is located in an old storage facility that was used for the Our Best Flour Company. They feature food like fried chicken, roast beef, fried pork chops, grilled tenderloin and fried chicken livers. The food at Our Best reminds me of all of the food that my mom cooked that I took for granted but now treat like a delicacy. My personal favorite is the fried oysters. Meals are served with pan fried cornbread that is tough to beat. Perhaps the best thing on the menu though is the chocolate meringue pie.

Our first visit to Our Best was two years ago before the 8th Region basketball final. We took in some great food at the restaurant and then headed over to watch the boys face Shelby County. While at the restaurant, we ran into the likes of Bones and Mary McKinley and Dave and Freda Kannady.

We stopped by and had a great meal at the restaurant on our way to the girl’s game at Shelby County the other day. We will probably stop by again if the boys make the regional tourney. If you are traveling 8th Region country for basketball, allow a little extra time and find Smithfield in Henry County on your map. You won’t be disappointed.
