Pioneer Football wins versus Russell on Field Goal With No Time on Clock

UPDATED INFORMATION:

Everyone was still talking tonight at the District Soccer Finals about how exciting the game was at Russell. The win halted Russell’s 33 game home win streak. Here are the highlights from the game last night.

SK fell behind 7-0 before Nate Ponzer took in a 47 yard pass from Pat Bustle to get within 1 after the kick failed. Ponzer gets his second TD from Bustle for SK to go up 12-7. The two point pass conversion failed. Things started looking bleak for the Pioneers as the Red Devils ran off 3 consecutive running scores to take a 28-12 lead. Miles Simpson took the kick-off back about 75 yards to the Russell 7 yard line that eventually set up a TJ Dawalt 2 yd TD run. SK trailes at half-time 35-19.

SK got on the board first in the second half after Bustle completes passes to Salyers and Ponzer set-up a 1 yard Dawalt run. Again, the conversion failed and the score stands 35-25. Russell gets a field goal to extend their lead. At this point, the SK defense steps up and doesn’t allow another Russell TD the rest of the game. Ponzer gets his third touchdown of the game to make the score 38-32 Russell. The defense gives another boost and causes a fumble. The offense then drives the ball deep and Salyers gets in on the TD game and gives SK their first lead of the game at 39-38. Russell then gets their 30 yard field goal with 11 seconds to take the 2 point lead. Russell squibbed the kickoff and a Pioneer up man fell on the ball at the 50 yard line and had time for two plays. The first play was a no gainer. The second play was a pass to Ponzer again who also was defended with a facemask penalty moving the ball up the field that allowed Bryan King’s heroics and the 31 yard field goal. Final score 42-41 SK- a win for the ages.

Here's what I gathered from talking to a SK dad on the way back from the game.

First of all, it was senior night at Russell. I understand that the complex at Russell is awesome. Everytime Russell scores a TD, a devil on top of the scoreboard shoots flames? Anyway, the Red Devils come into the game 7-0 and ranked 5th in the state. SK trails by 14 and things aren't looking good. The Pioneers come storming back and take the lead. Russell kicks a field goal with 11 seconds to go to and take a 2 point lead. SK runs an offensive play and what appeared to be a face mask penalty was called against Russell. Time actually expired but since a game can not end on a defensive penalty, Bryan King is allowed to come in and take a field goal attempt. GOOD!----from 32 and the Pioneers win by a point, 42-41.

More details to be provided tomorrow.
