Lady Pioneers Win SK's First Regional Title Since 1995!!!!

The Lady Pioneers soccer team was looking to do what no other team had done in the history of the program. Win their region. They hosted the Calvary Christian Cougars who they had defeated two other times this year; once in the regular season and once in the districts. You know all the old sports cliché’s- hard to beat a team three times, tournament time means a different game and on and on. They all pretty held true tonight but the Pioneers bring home the regional title by a final score of 1-0.

SK opened the game and played tight. They played with at sense of panic instead of a sense of purpose. They booted the ball wildly at times while the Calvary team played with a feeling that they didn’t have a lot of pressure on them. SK got several good chances but didn’t finish. The team goes into half-time tied at 0.

The tough part for the SK team before half was having the vocal leader Marie Cooper go down with an unidentified knee injury. We certainly pray that Coop is good to go.

The girls came out in the second half and played harder. There was still a sense of panic but they played hard. Calvary played just as hard and deserves a lot of credit. SK knocked the ball down the goal mouth several times. Finally, with 27 minutes to go in the second half, Jillian Russell touched a ball to Cousin Jessie Cooper in the box that Jessie drilled into the left corner of the net. SK up 1-0. Start the clock for the longest 27 minutes of the year. The goal gave the Pioneers a boost of energy and they started playing with some of the energy they had last night.

Finally, the WHISTLE. THE LADY PIONEERS WIN THEIR FIRST REGIONAL TITLE IN SOCCER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In addition, it was the school’s first regional team title in any sport since the boys basketball team won the region in 1995.

Congratulations to Dusty and the entire Pioneer team for winning region. You can proudly say you are part of the State’s Sweet 16. The girls certainly did what they had to do to win the title but a big thanks to Dusty for all the hard work that he puts in all year long and through the season to make sure that the girls can proudly say on three- Lady Pioneers – OOMPH.

  1. To all my friends at Simon Kenton -
Congratulations on winning the 9th region! You played your hearts out and are on a great roll heading to the Sweet Sixteen.

No matter who you face next - be it Highlands or Notre Dame - remember that they are just kids like you. They're not infallible, they're not machines. Play the same hard, aggressive style of soccer that you've exhibited during your 8 game winning streak, and you can knock either of those teams out.

    Good luck Pioneers!
