SK Lady Pioneers Take St. Henry by Land and Air in Kenton County Cup Action

The Lady Pioneers hosted the St. Henry Crusaders in a make-up game from earlier this year in Kenton County Cup action. This game was actually rained out back in August. (No, it didn’t rain in Independence but did in Erlanger at Dixie Heights where the game was originally scheduled.)

Another beautiful night for soccer at Menefee Stadium. The JV team has had a very strong season but faced an undefeated St. Henry team in the opener. The Cru takes the opener in a shutout. This was clearly the strongest JV team that SK played this year.

The Varsity Pioneers came up after warm-ups and had an extremely focused look on their faces. Once the opening whistle sounded, the Lady Pioneers played hard and executed with strong technical fortitude which allowed them to set tone for the game. SK didn’t let up and made nice play after nice play. SK got on the board first when a throw-in which landed in the Cru box was brought down by Lyndsay Figgins who struck the ball near post for the first SK score. St. Henry knotted the score at about four minutes before half-time when a SK direct free kick was knocked down and drilled for the score.

The Lady ‘Eers turned up the pressure from the start of the second half. SK scored their second goal of the game when Senior Shay Nienaber made a beautiful pass between two Cru defenders that Senior Stephanie Cagle was able to cross for the Jillian Russell goal. Needabobber and Cagle connected for the third Pioneer score when Shay’s long throw-in was brought down by Cagle and sent past the keeper. Nice games by both of these seniors.

The SK defense dug in to keep the Cru out of the net for the second half and SK goes on to win by a score of 3-1. This was a very strong game by SK and one that they need to package and deliver for the rest of the season.

The Lady Pioneers ended up with a shooting advantage over the Cru by a final of 24-13. SK has belted an amazing 90 shots in their last three games.

SK plays Calvary Christian in the last regular season district match-up on Thursday night at the Menefee.

On a final soccer note, please remember SK Senior Kevin Niehaus in your prayers as he has surgery this week on his jaw that will be wired shut for the next several weeks. Get well soon Kevin!

Another on the ground picture. Is that Cait on the ground? Expression is priceless. Cait also ended up with a torn jersey when a Cru player's cleat ended up wrapped in her jersey and she drug her down the field.
