SK Lady Pioneers Over Calvary

The SK Lady Pioneers hosted the Cougars from Calvary Christian in district soccer play tonight at the Menefee. SK came into the game looking for the victory that would lock up the 2nd seed in the district tournament with a win against Calvary.

The JV scored two second half goals to open up the night with a win.

The varsity team was hoping to bring another game like the one they had against St. Henry earlier in the week. SK came out and actually looked very tight. A nice cross by outside midfielder Krista Russell was knocked in by Brie Marti for SK’s first score of the night. The goal would hold up as the first half lead.

SK came out in the second half and actually played more relaxed. They turned up the pressure big time and kept the Cougars at bay. As can happen when the field is pushed up, Calvary got a counter attack going and scored to knot the score at one early in the half. The Calvary goal seemed to wake up the Lady Pioneers as they locked it in their attacking third of the field. Marti got involved in another play when she put the ball outside for Kelsey Rust. Rust got a shot on goal that was misplayed and crossed the goal line for the second score. SK got an insurance goal when the Figgins twins knocked a ball in that was bouncing in the box. The goal was scored by whoever you ask.

SK wins their third game in a row and extends their record to 6-4-1. SK outshot Calvary by a 34-9 margin for the night.

The girls play Russell on Saturday and then have three games in a row next Monday through Wednesday highlighted by number one ranked Highlands on Monday. They also play Holmes on Tuesday and Ryle on Wednesday.
