Pioneer Boys and Girls Blast Their Way into District Finals

The 32nd District Tournament opened play tonight at the Joe with both Pioneer teams in action against the Williamstown Demons. The Williamstown teams played with a lot of heart but were simply overmatched in both games. The boy’s team wins in the opener of 93-48 and the girl's team wins the nightcap by a score of 68-31. The Battle of the Bands was determined to be a draw. (You know what I mean if you were at the game and your ears are still ringing.)

Boys Game

The most significant story here was that Justin Kohrs went down in the first half with a sprained ankle.

Josh Elbert scored 19 points and now needs only 9 points to join the 1,000 point club. Elbert racked up 17 by the intermission. Other double figure scorers for the Pioneers- Nathan Ponzer on 6 for 7 shooting and 15 points; Zach Layne with 12 on 5 for 5 from the field and 2 for 2 on throws, Mike Hester and Langdon Barnes each had 11 and both were 3 for 4 from the trey line. As you can tell, the Pioneers shot a blistering 36 for 55 from the field (65.5%) and 13 for 20 (65%) from long distance.

The Pioneers will take on the winner of the Grant County versus Walton in the 32nd District final on Saturday night.

Girls Game

The Lady Pioneers raced out to a 21-4 first quarter lead and 41-12 half-time lead. Chelsea Tolliver racked up 20 first half points on her way to 24. Lauren Conley was the only other double figure scorer in the game with 10.

The Lady Pioneers will take on the Grant County versus Walton winner on Friday night at the Joe.

Josh Elbert scored 19 points and only needs 9 more for 1,000.
