Neers Take New Cath

SK travelled to Newport Stadium tonight for a rare Saturday night affair against the New Cath Thoroughbreds.  SK fell behind early after a long pass play put the Breds deep in SK territory.  New Cath would score with just over 10 minutes in the first quarter on their first possession.  SK’s offense had trouble getting on track early as things looked anything but good early.  New Cath would  move out to a 14-0 lead in early in the second quarter.

SK would finally get on the board just over 10 minutes in the second quarter when Brennan Kuntz connected with Andrew Sampson on a beautiful catch.  Sampson had two defenders draped on him and was interfered with but still was able to go up and haul in the pass for the touchdown.  A penalty on the two point conversion backed up the extra point kick attempt and was blocked putting the score at 14-6.  Sampson would get the next 6 points for SK on a running touchdown from about 6 yards out.  The extra point failed again as SK now trailed 14-12.  Lars McEntyre would give the Neers the go ahead touchdown a minute before half-time on a 21 yard pass from Kuntz.  Again, the extra point failed giving SK the 18-14 half-time lead.

SK came out in the third quarter and went almost exclusively no huddle on offense preventing New Cath from subbing much on defense.  The game would move to a normal spread on the scoreboard as Tyler Smith was able to get back the extra points with a 33 yard field goal with 8 minutes in the third quarter, putting SK up 21-14.  The big play would bite SK once again as a long pass play took New Cath to the three yard line and the eventual score.  The extra point bug bit the Breds this time as the snap was squandered allowing Swanson and Bowling to pounce on the kicker and holder.  SK would get a big touchdown with under two minutes to go in the third as Kuntz found Jacob Huesman at the endzone line on a broken play.  SK chose to go for the conventional kick extra point putting them up 28-20.

Defenses would stretch but not be scored upon in the final frame.  New Cath put together a nice drive at the end of the game that took them down in the Neer red zone.  New Cath would fumble the ball on a 4th and 2 play on SK’s six yard line giving SK the chance to run out the clock and preserve the win.

Stats of note; Kuntz was 16 for 29 with 240 yards and 3 TD's.  Sampson would rush for over 100 yards and have 38 yards receiving scoring TD's both ways.  Also in receiving yards, Huseman would haul in 6 passes for 95 yards and Grant Wassom would get 8 for 86 yards.

Certainly not the prettiest of wins but the team did what they needed to do for the win after falling behind by two touchdowns early in the game.  SK will open up big school play next week taking on the Ryle Raiders in Union next Friday.
