Neer Girls Win Polar Opposite Half Battle

SK travelled to Latonia tonight to take on the Holy Cross Indians for their rendition of senior night.

I'm not sure what was going in the first half; the Neers didn't play their D system, they didn't rebound or get after loose balls and they couldn't score. As bad as SK played they only trailed 24 to 21 at the break. To be honest, it was probably their worst half of the year. Not really any details that I could point to that could be positves in that half.

Whatever was said once the girls went to the locker room at intermission worked as SK would come out in the third period and flat-out step it up. Holy Cross wouldn't score until there were just over two minutes to go in the quarter. Although SK had things going their way with MO on their side, ironically they got a nice shot of adrenaline from a play delivered by the Indians. Sara Tomliin was blasted, tied up and slung to the hardwood. The call was a jump-ball. It was just a basketball play but definitely a physical one. Coach Stowers called an immediate full timeout for what must have been an interesting explanation. The Neer faithful got a little fired up to say the least and became the 6th man on the Indians home court. SK would finally grab their first lead with 5:30 left in the third quarter and never look back. SK would lead 36 to 28 after the exciting quarter capped off by an Abby Owings buzzer beating bank shot from 30 feet out.

Holy Cross would have trouble of getting anything going as the SK Blue Curtain defense was finally dropped. SK's defense turned to offense as they ended up blowing the game open.  Perhaps the most entertaining moment in the game happened late in the fourth quarter when Coach Stowers gave a nice demo of the slaps and jabs that Owings got on a drive to the basket. He slapped his jaw, head, arms, wrists, hands and legs to point to some of the areas Abby got hit on before she was whistled for the travel.

The Neers would end up outscoring the Indians by a margin of 32 to 12 in the second half to end up cruising to a 56 to 34 W and move their record out to 18-9. Definitely a strange night as SK played one of their worst and best halves of the season in the same game.

The SK JV team won a physical contest against the Cross "JV" team that contained all but 4 of the players who dressed varsity. The JV team travels to take on the Breds on the hill in the NKAC semifinals tomorrow night.  The Neers JV girls currently are sporting a 23-2 record.
