Lady Pioneers Secure #1 District Seed

The Lady Pioneers hosted the WV Bearcats at the Joe tonight in a pivotal district match-up. WV came in with a 16-3 record with their only district and regional losses having come at the hands of the Pioneers. Both teams were coming off of losses, SK after a couple of tough games against Boone and Ryle and Walton lost a game in the Elite 8 at the All A Classic. Let’s get any anticipation out of the way; the Pioneers come out on top by a final of 41-34 and claim their 5th straight #1 seed in the district. The Lady Neers extend their 32nd District win streak to 38-0.

Big news tonight was Sydni Wainscott’s return to the line-up. The point guard didn’t look 100% but she played good enough to come up with some key baskets and played every minute of the game if my memory is correct.

Walton scored the first basket of the game and led after the first frame by a score of 10-6. The Pioneers held WV to 6 points in the second quarter and went up by a half-time score of 18-16 after a bouncing ball ended up in Nicki Brown’s hands that was converted to a lay-up at the buzzer.

The game had a defensive tone to it that was just scrappy. Lots of pushing, hooking, diving, elbowing, and grabbing going on from both sides. The Pioneers struggled at times with some unforced errors but really kept their poise down the stretch when it was needed the most.

SK led 32-26 after the third quarter and started to look like they were going to pull away from the Lady Cats. Not so; WV went on a 8-2 run to open the final frame and would knot the score at 34 with just under three minutes in the game. SK got it together and dominated the last 2 ½ minutes to go on a 7-0 run to secure the win. Congrats on the #1 District Seed!!
