The Pioneers hosted the Oldham County Colonels in a Boy/Girl Double Header tonight at the Joe. Oldham County is an eighth region foe whose boys and girls teams both made it to regional competition last year. In the opening round game, the girls came out with a victory by a score of 48-28 and in the night cap, the boys won 50-41.
All 1,000 point scorers for the girls teams were honored between the games.
Girls Recap
The girls came out and gave Oldham a good dose of the Blue Swarm Defense and held the Lady Colonels scoreless in the first quarter while SK put 14 on the board. SK held Oldham to just 8 points in the second quarter and took a commanding 34-8 lead into half-time. Oldham would out score the Pioneers by 14-6 in the third. SK took a little air out of the ball in the fourth quarter and held Oldham to 6 points.
SK was led in scoring by Chelsea Tolliver with 16 points and Jessica Farris with 12. SK gave up some size to the Colonels but out rebounded Oldham by 44-22, led by Caitlyn Figgins with 8.
Boys Recap
This was a game that had an almost regional tournament feel to it. Both teams were very physical throughout the game. The first half was low scoring as SK outscored Oldham 11-6 in the first and second quarters. Oldham came out determined in the third and cut the lead down to 5 at the end of three. Oldham would get no closer than three points in the fourth quarter as SK always seemed to get a bucket when they needed it.
The Pioneers were led by Josh Elbert’s effort with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Josh Hurd was the only other double figure scorer at 12. Zach Layne had 9 and Nate Ponzer had a nice game with 6 points and 4 assists leading the Pioneer offense. SK did shoot free throws very well by connecting on 11 out of 14 for 78.6%.
The boys will play in the Toyota Classic at Scott County on Wednesday.
The girls won’t see action again until Friday when they travel to take on the Boone County Rebels.
